Some words on Testing

Food intolerances can be tricky to pin down. If you are facing uncertainty as to the cause, our advice regarding the best way forward would be to let one of our experienced Practitioners analyse and understand your symptoms and recommend the best test for you.

We take the guess work away, we can establish exactly what you are reacting to with one simple test.

Our Practitioners will take a full case history together with a gastrointestinal analysis to understand better your symptoms.

We can often give some relief with a simple gut health protocol whilst we are waiting for your test results.

Our Processes are designed and our Practitioners are trained to tease out all of these issues and to maximise the chances of methodically determining the root cause and therefore the most effective pathway to relief.

We are here for you

One certainty is that doing nothing will achieve nothing !

These issues can be very frustrating; we know as we see many patients a week who have put up with irritating allergy / food intolerance symptoms for long periods of time.

We would be pleased to offer our experience to help you. We will ask you to complete a comprehensive on-line questionnaire. Once we have analysed your Health Analysis Questionnaire responses and you have spoken at length to one of our Practitioners you and your Practitioner will come up with a way forward to address any frustrating symptoms that you have had to deal with.

Our reception by phone is manned from 08:00 through to 19:00 seven days a week.

You will also find the physical clinic opening hours further down this page. So please contact us

Instagram post 18142007584070059 Eggs are a powerhouse of essential nutrients and provide significant amounts of protein, calcium, iron, zinc and B-vitamins. That is the good news! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The not so good news is that eggs are a common allergen; much more common than people think. We see all the time from our food intolerance testing reports that eggs are a highly allergic food and very common in children which poses a problem when feeding our little ones as eggs are easy to cook, soft to eat, nutritious and kids love them! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The fact that they are very much present in our food climate also makes it very hard to avoid them.
It is therefore important to always read the ingredients label carefully before purchase. Here is a checklist of some of the main product ingredients that are derived from eggs - Albumin, Egg white, Egg yolk, Frozen egg, Dried egg, Egg powder, Egg protein, Ovalbumin, Ovovitellin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Symptoms of an egg allergy can range from hives, itching, watering eyes, runny nose and rash like eruptions. A sensitivity or intolerance to eggs - a more delayed reaction - could manifest in symptoms such as bloating, headaches, constipation or diarrhoea. Both egg yolks and egg white contain proteins that can cause a reaction, but an allergy or sensitivity to egg white has been found to be most common. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The only way to find out if you have any reaction or sensitivity to eggs is through proper testing which we offer at PAC. Eliminating eggs from your diet can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know what to replace them with. We have qualified Naturopaths and Nutritionists who can help you plan your meals to ensure that you get adequate protein whilst undergoing an elimination and rotational diet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With a professionally structured and administered program your body can “learn” to tolerate eggs and enjoy them. From our experience of elimination and rotational diets once adhered to give amazing results! So you or your family do not need to be egg free forever! P.S. try to always buy pasture raised eggs for better nutritional content.

Instagram post 17912163679447524 This experience is caused by your level of sensitivity to the food (e.g. how much immune molecules are produced in reaction to the food) and how histamine is released from the mast cells.

You see, mast cells break open (degranulate) to release histamine. This degranulation can be either partial and complete. In science papers this is called:

👉 piecemeal degranulation: selective release of histamine from the mast cells. This leads to a conserved inflammatory process and milder symptoms. It is often the process in delayed or chronic reactions such as in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

👉 full (or anaphylactic) degranulation: explosive release of histamine from mast cells; common in sensitivity and allergic reaction.

Instagram post 17892271051559079 The largest population of mast cells in the body is found in the intestines.

Mast cells are key to intestinal health. They can determine:

👉 how well the gut functions
👉 how intact the intestinal barrier is, and
👉 how the immune system reacts to foreign/environmental particles (including food and bacteria).

In a research paper by Albert-Bayo et al. (2019) they outline how a disturbed intestinal barrier (sometimes called ‘leaky gut’ or intestinal hyperpermeability) can cause histamine to be released by the immune system. The mast cells can be activated by other immune molecules, including the antibodies IgE and IgG. This occurs in multiple digestive issues including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and indigestion (known as functional dyspepsia).

Instagram post 18068458063214217 Mast cells make a difference!

Mast cells are the immune cells that play a key role in allergies, sensitivities and gastrointestinal conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Coeliac disease).

Mast cells are found in many tissues of the body, though they are mostly located in areas that have close contact with the environment – such as the skin, intestinal lining, lungs, and urinary tract. They help create the body’s barrier to infectious organisms, harmful substances, or other challenges from the environment.

Why is this important?

Mast cells release histamine and inflammatory molecules that contribute to allergic reaction (swelling, skin rashes, etc.), asthma, and intestinal inflammation.

We’re going to look more into these fascinating immune cells and what it means for your health in our upcoming posts.

Instagram post 17857299140016018 The Microbiome in Babies and Toddlers – Part Three

At Perth Allergy Clinic we look after many babies and toddlers who suffer with allergies. We would like to share with you some very important things we have learned from clinical experience that we can pass onto you about your babies’ microbiome.
An infant’s microbiome is very immature for the first few years therefore it is vulnerable especially if there is a family history of allergies and/or an illness which has required antibiotic therapy. Both of these can make the already permeable gastro intestinal tract (git) lining even more permeable. This permeability may induce an immune response which may manifest in symptoms of eczema, skin rashes, hives. It is therefore, very important to support your child’s microbiome with immune strain specific probiotics. The more you look after your child’s microbiome in the formative years the healthier your child will be. At three years of age the microbiome stabilises and whatever condition the microbiome is in at that stage is what your child has to live with moving forward in life.
If there is a family history of allergies especially on the mother’s side then we encourage the mother to have a test to check for food intolerances and or sensitivities.
The best time to test is either in the pre-conception care period or in the early stages of pregnancy. This way we can identify the foods causing inflammation and minimise them with an elimination and rotational diet which will decrease the inflammation for the mother and reduce the risk for the unborn child.
We can test children from the age of 6 months and work with the food intolerance report so as to introduce the solids that your child is not allergic to, build up their microbiome and then rotate the food groups so your child has a healthy balanced diet.

We are now not only battling with allergies but also Covid-19. The need to be more specific about probiotics is absolutely crucial. No-one wants to buy a probiotic that is not going to help with their health especially in this current situation which we are all facing. 😷🤧🤒

The good news is that if you are an allergy sufferer then we can supply you with not only the strains to assist with your allergies but also the strains to fortify your immune system and keep it healthy to fight off viruses.

Often the strains of probiotics used for allergy sufferers also help us with building and supporting our immune system. By the way, you don’t have to be an allergy sufferer to get this information we will help support your immune system too!

When using probiotics, it is important to know the type, or strain, you are using. At Perth Allergy Clinic we know our strains! For example, Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG® is a well-researched probiotic for immune support, but if you use another Lactobacillus rhamnosus that is not the LGG® strain, the effects may not be the same, despite being the same genus (Lactobacillus) and species (rhamnosus).

Specific strains have the ability to preserve and enhance microbiome health, while others provide relief from various symptoms, such as infections, allergy and digestive pain.

In our next few posts we will write about Microbial Building Blocks for Babies and Toddlers, Pregnancy and Adult health. We will be sharing with you as much information as we can to assist you and your family in maintaining a healthy immune system. 💛

Instagram post 17930434099378199 Allergy and reactivity may affect various systems in the body and result in many possible clinical manifestations. These include traditional allergic symptoms such as 🔸Allergic rhinitis 🔸Hayfever 🔸Eczema and Asthma 🔸Gastrointestinal 🔸Fatigue 🔸Headache 🔸Joint Pain
Regardless of the cause, be it environmental or food induced, the impact on an individual’s quality of life can be considerable.
When it comes to clinical approaches the currently accepted consensus is to avoid the allergen and prescribe symptomatic relief when needed.
However, restricted diets that eliminate food groups long term may create a risk of nutritional deficiencies as well as emotional and social stress.
Whilst it may offer short term symptom relief, just removing the ‘trigger’ of the allergy fails to address the underlying pathophysiology driving the over-reactivity.
Symptoms of over-reactivity may arise from: 🔸Immune dysfunction 🔸Inflammation 🔸Poor digestion 🔸Intestinal hyper-permeability 🔸Gut dysbiosis 🔸Poor detoxifying mechanisms
Our Allergy and Reactivity Reduction Program has been designed to increase tolerance to allergens by addressing the therapeutic targets for reactivity. We aim to provide not only symptom relief but to address the underlying causes by supporting immune system modulation, promoting optimal digestive function and gut barrier repair as well as to restore a healthy microbiome.

Instagram post 18144626263055479 We all know that regular exercise is good for our health. It maintains weight, improves cardiovascular disease and can help lower blood pressure but there are also some theories that suggest that regular exercise is good for our immune system. Theories suggest that by promoting circulation by exercising, allows our white blood cells to move through our body more efficiently. Exercise can help the immune system locate and deal with pathogens. Regular exercise can slow down changes that occur in the immune system which reduces the risk of infections.

Moderation is key, over exercising can cause stress in your body which can lead to inflammation. Therefore, to boost your immune system along with a healthy diet and getting adequate sleep, moderate exercise is all we need. Simply walking 30 minutes per day has been shown to reduce a person’s chance of catching a cold.

There are many online classes on offer right now, so try out some yoga or fun exercise classes or simply just get outside and go for that walk or cycle. If all else fails, put on your favourite song and dance like no one is watching. 💃🏻

Instagram post 17907432304457469 Every day at Perth Allergy Clinic we see so many people who experience adverse reactions to foods. There are many reactions but the common ones we regularly see are: •
🔸 Eczema
🔸 Abdominal pain
🔸 Bloating
🔸 Constipation and diarrhoea
🔸 Depression
🔸 Fatigue & lethargy
🔸 Fluid retention
🔸 Headache, Migraine
🔸 Nausea
🔸 Rashes
🔸 Acne
🔸 Arthritis
🔸 Autism
🔸 Irritable Bowel Syndrome
🔸 Psoriasis

Food intolerances are tricky to pinpoint as the symptoms can manifest over 2-3 days therefore it is hard to be sure which food might have been the culprit or in fact if it was a combination of several foods.

The term “food sensitivity or food intolerance” refers to a condition where an individual reacts to an ingested food as though it were a toxin. Foods that are normally considered healthy to most human immune systems, are reacted to as a threat in those individuals with food intolerances.

Symptoms vary considerably and the manifestations appear in different ways to different foods. Many people live with minor or major symptoms of adverse food reactions for years without ever suspecting the involvement of the immune system and the foods that trigger its reaction.

We hear the same story over and over “I’ve been living with my xxx problem for many years and I’m so fed up with it!” Now it’s time to do something about it.

Our advice is the detection and measurement of food intolerances is the first step! You have to know what you are reacting too in order to fix it!

Following the dual implementation of dietary changes based on measurement of food intolerances and the repairing of leaky gut, many individuals report improved weight control, healthier skin, more vitality and altogether a better quality of life,

For the month of June we are putting our very popular Food Print +220 (testing for 220 food sensitivities) on special for $449.00.

Instagram post 17903636272471371 "I want to start with my health history, build you a picture of how much my life has changed because of Susan Carr and Perth Allergy Clinic.

Growing up I had problems with my health. Extreme colds/flus, sensitivity to smells, chronic pains, occasional extreme dose of hives, swelling/water retention, anxiety, depression, behaviour disorders, restlessness. It impacted my life more than I knew. I had problems learning, playing sports, making friends and later keeping a job.

One of the things I had no idea was that I had intolerances to certain foods, temperatures/humidity and physical pressure/skin sensitivity. Neither did the doctors. My mother would take me to the doctor, do some tests and say there is nothing wrong with me.

The last 5 years had been the most stressful, the most chronic and acute of my conditions because at one stage I was ingesting 11 pharmaceutical tablets a day to function at all. An Immunologist diagnosis was Chronic and Acute Urticaria Angioedema Dermatographism and a doctor who figured out I had Erythromelalgia and a Gynaecologist said I had Chronic Pain. I have also other diagnosis but I want to concentrate on these conditions.

Friends had recommended me to see Susan and it is the greatest thing I could have done. Because at this point I was eating 1 meal a day, in pain constantly and at risk of losing my job again due to flare ups.

Since seeing Susan from Oct 2019 I eat 3 meals a day, I go to work, I am active and I fit into clothes I have not been able to wear for 8 years. I have control of my life again. Not only that, it changed my husband’s way of life too.

I think the hardest thing to do is take that step and trust that it could work. I tell anyone to take that leap of faith and go see Susan Carr at Perth Allergy Clinic. Because it just might change your life. It might change how you live."

Instagram post 17849220467081549 Just like with your digestive lining, your skin lining has it’s own microbiome a natural balance of beneficial organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi and mites) that help to keep your skin healthy.

The skin barrier is made of up layers of skin (making it tough), fats (the glue to retain skin moisture) and beneficial organisms (that help fight off harmful bacteria).

This barrier can become damaged and weak when

- the body can’t produce enough healthy skin proteins or fats (this can due to certain genetics such as defects in the filaggrin gene);

- the skin is constantly exposed to irritants (such as chemicals, dust mites, allergies); or

- the skin microbiome (balance of good to bad organisms on the skin) changes

- the immune system is swamped (i.e. there is infection with staph. aureus bacteria and the immune system isn’t making enough anti-microbial peptides (AMPs), or the body is producing lots of histamine in response to immune irritants).

Some call this a “leaky” skin barrier because it allows more substances – harmful bacteria, pollen, mould, or chemicals – to get into the blood stream and activate the immune system.

Instagram post 17846257118152723 Previously we’ve talked about how the words dermatitis and eczema mean “breaking” and “inflammation of the skin”. So what causes this to happen?

Well, you can develop eczema for many reasons; and sometimes it’s not clear what is the underlying cause. For this reason, science will tell you that the cause of eczema is unknown. Because there is no definitive or singular cause for it. And sometimes it’s a question of what came first .. “the chicken, or the egg?”

It may be because of:

- genetic predisposition: defects in certain genes (e.g. filaggrin gene) or a family history of eczema, asthma or hay fever;

- a thin and porous skin barrier (this is such an interesting topic that we’re going to talk about in our next post. So don’t miss it!); and

- allergies and heightened immune sensitivity.
Each of these key areas are so pivotal to the development of eczema that they all deserve a “deep dive” into understanding how they contribute to eczema, and more importantly, what we can do about them.

Stay tuned for more!

Instagram post 18088780705170564 Case History of a young man 22 years old. Suffered with chronic eczema from birth. Eczema all over his arms, legs, hands, throat, torso, thighs and recently neck.

Has seen many dermatologists, GP's and immunologists and taken a variety of prescription steroid drugs and creams along with copious amounts of anti-histamines.

Eczema cracks and weeps with the open wounds become infected. He was prescribed antibiotics by GPs throughout his childhood and teens.

This young man came to see us to seek a different approach to his chronic skin condition. In the photographs you will see a "before" photograph taken 20th April and an "after" taken 19th May.

This is a work in progress but after one month his itching is less, there are now no open wounds or cracked skin. The weeping has stopped. The eczema has settled right down on his arms, legs and face. We are now working on his hands.

We are also addressing the 'root cause' of his problem and he is responding so well.

We give credit to this brave young man, he has religiously adhered to our health protocol and dietary advice.

Instagram post 17880879559608382 The month of May is eczema awareness month. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eczema is a chronic skin condition that we often see in clinic. It affects 1 in 3 children and more than 1 million Australians at some point in their lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever heard the words “eczema” and “dermatitis” used and gotten confused as to what is what? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Eczema and dermatitis are actually different names for the same conditions, and they are often used interchangeably. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The word dermatitis comes from the Greek word derma-, meaning “skin”, and -titis, meaning “inflammation”. So dermatitis literally means “inflammation of the skin”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The word eczema comes from Greek and New Latin words meaning “eruption” or to boil over, break out, or seethe”. Whether you call it eczema or dermatitis, these skin conditions involve red, inflamed, dry, and itchy skin. The constantly irritated skin can sometimes erupt with fluid-filled blisters that ooze or crust over; skin cracks that can bleed; or thickened skin that flakes and creates a rough and scaly appearance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In our next post we’ll look at some factors that contribute to eczema.
